Guidelines for Topic Selection
We don’t expect you to save the world.
We want you to change something real.
Your project topic matters. It’s not just about picking what’s popular — it’s about choosing something meaningful, specific, and doable.
Here are three guiding principles to help you choose a powerful, purpose-driven topic:
1. Is it a real social or environmental problem that impacts people’s lives?
We want you to focus on challenges that cause harm, especially to vulnerable and underserved communities.
Not every problem is a “social issue.”
For example:
🚫 Not suitable:
-
A millionaire struggling to become a billionaire
-
A company trying to reduce its taxes
-
A student looking for ways to cheat on exams
-
Someone dieting just to look good in photos
✅ Suitable topics address:
-
Inequality
-
Injustice
-
Environmental degradation
-
Barriers to access or opportunity
2. Is it something you truly care about?
We don’t believe that social impact has to be “far away” to be valid.
Whether you care about:
-
Girls facing FGM in Kenya, or
-
Your immigrant housekeeper’s children in New York, or
-
Plastic pollution in your city’s river…
It’s all valid — as long as you’re passionate about it.
Let your values guide your topic. Not the headlines.
3. Is this a problem where YOU can make a real difference?
We don’t need grand, global solutions. We want small, actionable efforts with real outcomes.
For example:
-
You won’t stop climate change — but you can help your school reduce AC usage
-
You won’t end poaching — but you can convince friends to say no to ivory
-
You won’t end poverty — but you can help one family increase their income
Focus on what you can change. And then — go do it.
